The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MoCST) has recently announced that three renowned dishes, namely Pho Nam Dinh (Phở Nam Định), Pho Hanoi (Phở Hà Nội), and Quang Noodle (Mì Quảng), have been recognized as national intangible cultural heritage. These dishes have historical, intellectual, and community connection values. The Ministry emphasized that these cultural heritages represent the local identity, showcase cultural diversity and human creativity, and have the potential for restoration and long-term sustainability.
Pho Hanoi, Pho Nam Dinh (Phở Hà Nội, Phở Nam Định), a culinary and cultural icon, is not only the pride of the people of Hanoi and Nam Dinh, but also of the entire Vietnamese nation
The introduction of Pho Hanoi highlights its unique characteristics, such as the pho broth served with beef and chicken, the cooking technique, and the dining environment. The Ministry appreciates Pho Hanoi as a popular dish in Vietnamese cuisine.
Similarly, Pho Nam Dinh has become a source of pride for the land and people of Nam Dinh. The unique aspects of Pho Nam Dinh, from preparation to ingredient selection and the method of making the distinctive pho noodles, contribute to its culinary brand value.
On the other hand, Quang Noodle (Mì Quảng), from Quang Nam (Quảng Nam), is also included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
Quang Nam and Da Nang leave an unforgettable impression with the distinctive flavor of their signature dish, Quang Noodle (Mì Quảng)
However, the profession of making Quang Noodle is facing challenges due to modern noodle-making machines and the younger generation's declining interest in pursuing this profession. The recognition of these dishes as national cultural heritage encourages localities to protect and promote their values. Currently, the list of national intangible cultural heritages includes nearly 500 heritages.
